Jewelry Coins
The majority of collectors hate to see coins in jewelry. The reason being is that a coin that is either in jewelry or was in jewelry at one time loses most of its numismatic value as a result. If you think about it, people want jewelry to shine! In order to get jewelry to shine, you must clean it and polish it – both of which are detrimental to the value of the coin. In addition to that, when you create jewelry from a coin you typically have to put a hole in the coin or surround it with a bezel. It should be obvious why a hole would detract from a coins value. As for being placed in a bezel, since gold is a soft metal it will typically have remnants of imprints of where the bezel touched the coin. Due to these reasons, jewelry coins usually stay jewelry coins.
Here is an example of a coin that is currently in a piece of jewelry. As you can see, this particular piece of jewelry is a Bolo Tie and the coin is a Gold Mexican 50 Pesos. The 50 Pesos contains 1.2057 oz of gold. I’m sure there is a cowboy somewhere that would love to have this piece of coin jewelry as-is. Unfortunately, there is also a whole world of coin collectors that cringe a little bit when they see this!
